BIO

Raised in a fundamentalist Bible Belt community, cinematographer Nicholas Matthews found himself drawn to films—in a place that banned movie theaters and censored media. Since then, he’s shot features, shorts, music videos, and commercials in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and across the U.S. Most recently, he lensed the pilot for BLACK VEIL, a Southern-Gothic horror anthology, directed by Dan Myrick (writer & co-director The Blair Witch Project).

CUCK, his latest theatrical release, was described as "a lurid psychosexual nightmare" (Hollywood Reporter) & “a vitally relevant work...repellant, honest, & astute” (The Guardian).  The film premiered at the Cleveland International Film Festival before winning the Seymour Cassel Award at the Oldenburg Film Festival. He’s shot numerous short films including Japanese horror MAKHALISS (Los Angeles Asian Pacific Festival 2020), scifi short IMMORTAL (Newport Beach Film Festival 2020), and horror short RED LIGHT, which stars Ted Raimi (Evil Dead 2), and was selected to premiere in competition at the 2020 Sitges Film Festival.

He’s worked with artists on music videos ranging from Ice Cube’s “Good Cop Bad Cop” to Sour Face’s “Human Killer” (Official Selection Berlin Music Video Awards 2020). He's shot commercial projects for clients including Specialized Bikes, The Getty, and T-Mobile. Currently, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two dogs. He thrives on collaboration in discovering each film’s unique visual story.
