"A cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist - moving an audience through a movie ... making them think the way you want them to think, painting pictures in the dark." - Gordon Willis, ASC.

Raised in a fundamentalist Bible Belt community, cinematographer Nicholas Matthews found himself drawn to films—in a place that banned movie theaters and censored media. Most recently, he shot the pilot for Black Veil, a Southern Gothic horror anthology directed by Dan Myrick, co-creator of Blair Witch Project. Cuck, his latest feature, is a dark character study that The Guardian called “a vitally relevant work...repellant, honest, & astute."
He’s shot features, shorts, and commercials in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and across the U.S. He's worked with artists ranging from Ice Cube to Rise Against, as well as brands including Specialized Bikes, Jack in the Box, and T-Mobile. Today, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two dogs where he thrives on collaboration in discovering each film’s unique visual story.
