"A cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist - moving an audience through a movie ... making them think the way you want them to think, painting pictures in the dark." - Gordon Willis, ASC.

Raised in the fundamentalist Christian subculture of the Bible Belt, cinematographer Nicholas Matthews fell in love with storytelling as a child to explore life outside the confines of that perspective.
It evolved into a fascination with telling regional stories about fringe ideologies and marginalized people. Most recently, he shot the pilot of Black Veil, a Southern Gothic horror anthology directed by Dan Myrick, co-creator of Blair Witch Project.
Cuck, his latest feature, is a dark character study that follows an extremist loner's descent into violence. The Guardian called the film, “A vitally relevant work...repellant, honest, & astute." While the Hollywood Reporter described it as “a lurid psychosexual nightmare reminiscent of Darren Aronofsky's 'Requiem for a Dream.'
Recently, he's filmed projects in Japan, Europe, Mexico and across the US. He's worked with artists ranging from Ice Cube to Rise Against, as well as brands including Specialized Bikes, Jack in the Box, and T-Mobile. He thrives on collaboration in finding each film's unique voice.
